Barlinnie receives all male prisoners from the courts in the West of Scotland. It retains adult remand prisoners, and prisoners serving less than 4 years for the duration of their sentence. It allocates suitable prisoners from its convicted population to a range of lower security prisons, and manages prisoners serving sentences of 4 years or more in the initial phases of their sentence, until places become available for them in the long term prisoner system.

CHAPLAINCY
The spiritual needs of Barlinnie prisoners are addressed by a team of 9 part time Chaplains (5 Church of Scotland, 4 Roman Catholic.). Services are held in the Chapel every Sunday and all major Christian festivals are celebrated., Prisoners are encouraged to practise their religion and provision is made for prisoners of all faiths. The Chaplains are supported by accredited spiritual advisors representing numerous ethnic groups and minority faiths. Muslin prisoners participate in Friday prayers and observe the major Muslim festivals.

DRUGS
The Barlinnie Drug Service Team was created as a response to the development of the local drug strategy in December 2000. The team consists of 2 managers and 18 residential officers. Within the team there are 9 staff working in the Drug Support Unit which is situated in D Hall. This is a unit which holds 50 prisoners who are trying to get off drugs. Six staff who assist a nurse in the administration of methadone, who also deliver programmes such as harm reduction, relapse prevention and a drug reduction course. The remaining 3 staff work in the Mandatory Drug Testing Unit. All prisoners who test positive for drugs are referred to the Drug Service Team for assessment. Anyone can refer a prisoner for assessment, from his family or drug worker to himself. All Drug Service Team staff will be trained in counseling.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING
Vocational Training is offered in painting and decorating and certified to SCOTVEC standard. Training in industrial cleaning, certified by the British Institute of Cleaning Science is offered to those prisoners selected to work as passmen/cleaners within the residential and administration areas of the prison.

PRISONER PROGRAMMES
A number of programmes are run in the halls to address offending behaviour and other problems, including cognitive skills, Sex Offender Treatment Programme 2000 and Problem Solving Skills Technique programme, anger management, drug awareness groups, and self-awareness groups to address mental health problems.

There are 8 main workshops which provide industrial activity for approximately 360 prisoners. A small gardens/amenity work party provides employment for approximately 10 prisoners. The types of job opportunities provided are designed to afford as much "quality work" as is appropriate for a short term prisoner population. Employment opportunities range from unskilled work in the metal recovery workshop to highly skilled work in the textile or wood machine workshops.

In addition around 160 prisoners are employed on catering or domestic duties.

As well as providing work the workshops also provide training for prisoners to improve their employability on release. Prisoners are currently learning joinery skills in the SVQ "Working with Wood" as well as basic manual handling. Around 20 prisoners at any one time advance to a fuller Health and Safety, First Aid and Industrial Cleaning training through the New Deal Initiative.
